Lafcadio Hearn, "Kimiko", 1895. Written of a different Japanese night quarter, a century before these frames.

Most of these were made in Kabukichō, Tokyo's night quarter, in December. The women holding the all-you-can-drink signs stand on the same few meters of sidewalk for hours at a time.
